Why have these characters just appear once in a while for an issue or an arc here and there, rather than have that PLUS a solo to show what they are up to when they're not fulfilling their usual supporting character role over in Thor? Because occasional appearances in Thor is what would end up happening either way. There are just too many Asgardian characters to have them all appear on a regular basis in Thor. Not all the ones they try will land, sure, same as with any new book, but it's still worth a try. And yeah, Wil Moss has earned my trust, he's a good editor. (and not just cu I am a Loki fan.) I think there are so many cool characters in Asgard right now, that they can easily support a few extra books. But I think the characters they chose are ones well suited for solos right now. Yeah, you can end up with pointless stuff.

This edition of Margot Lee Shetterly’s acclaimed book is perfect for young readers. The uplifting, amazing true story-a New York Times bestseller! Today I’m sharing 16 standout retellings of classics, plus a handful lingering on my TBR list. Barbara Kingsolver’s triumphant retelling Demon Copperhead is an excellent example: you don’t need to read David Copperfield first, but once you’re done with Kingsolver’s, I bet you’ll want to.ĭoes the retelling illuminate a theme, character, or scene I otherwise overlooked?Įxcellent retellings offer something new and unexpected, such as a story told from the side character’s perspective, flashbacks to reveal more about a beloved character’s backstory, or a brand new setting for the familiar story.Īs a devoted structure nerd, I soak up these fresh takes on old stories, eager to see how an author’s changes highlight (or sometimes, subvert) the themes of the original text. In my bookish opinion, the best classic retellings require no prior knowledge of the original book-but they might make you want to pick up the classic when you’re finished. Is the retelling an excellent story in its own right? But whether or not I keep reading a retelling depends on two important factors: I will read a few pages of almost any Jane Austen retelling that crosses my shelf, no matter how outlandish the premise may seem. Longtime readers know I’m a soft touch when it comes to classic literature retellings. This led Jonathan to go back to his former seagull community where he was banished from. However, he kept learning, he transcended to another realm, and asides from improving his flight skills he also had to learn to love others, to forgive and show kindness. But with this newfound feat, the elders of the seagull community thought him a disgrace, thus banished him, as no seagull was ever expected to do what Jonathan did. He found new ways to fly at different speeds and ever so graciously. However, Jonathan discovered there was more to life than surviving. Within the seagull community, seagulls lived a very bland life, only living to feed off fish from boats and the likes. This short book is about a seagull named Jonathan Livingston Seagull, who wanted more for his life, went after the more he found, was banished for being an outlier, yet he learned to perfect his skills, to love and show kindness. What is Jonathan Livingston Seagull all about? Either way, I went on to get the audio version of Jonathan Livingston Seagull from Audible, and I was blown away by the audio narration, the sound of the sea, of waves, air, the melody, etc.! I listened over and over to specific portions and truly, I recommend this as a great read to anyone wanting to explore life despite others being afraid or limiting them. This book could have edited for content in the middle act. Connie Willis tells a subtle yet harrowing tale of disease and time travel. It combines two of my favorite genres: historical fiction and science fiction. Highly recommended for everyone who likes to get lost in a good book, whether they're science fiction fans or not. The novel takes its time and layers on elements of drama and comedy, and because it takes it's time it is incredibly affecting in its final pages. Some reviewers complain about the characters' anxiety over seemingly little things, but that's how people are, and Willis' ability to put the reader into her characters' heads ends up making the story she tells incredibly satisfying. The main thing is the characters, the Oxford academics who have real relationships and real worries. I didn't even read the whole back-cover description. All I knew was that it is about academic time travel between future and Medieval Oxford. I didn't know much about the premise, because I wanted to let the story do it's work. When a friend recommended it, I finally plucked it down and started reading. I bought this book because I wanted to read something by Connie Willis, and then it sat on my shelf for a few years. Imagine The Blue Lagoon, but too cold for sexy “primitive” costumes.Įven before their parents die, the siblings have their antenna up for signals from the outside world, especially when the eccentric Mary Oram shows up to deliver their sister Martha, who dies as an infant: Crummey doesn’t specify the era, but the presence of merchant ships and archaic language suggests the 19 th century. Orphaned in remote Newfoundland, they must figure out their survival with little guidance in a harsh, wintry landscape. Two children, the older boy Evered Best and his younger sister Ada, lose their parents. The Innocents is Crummey’s fifth novel–Scotiabank nominated his first, River Thieves, for Canada’s Giller Prize, and he’s also published several books of poetry. With The Innocents, author Michael Crummey goes against modern storytelling instincts to ratchet up stimulus, choosing instead to render a tale so finely hewn you realize what we give up when we replace drama with sound and fury. In the 82 years since its first publication, “Who Goes There?” has been anthologized countless times. The story, titled “Who Goes There?”, was an immediate hit with readers. It was not unusual for pulp editors to buy their own stories, but a common practice was to publish those self-serving pieces under a pseudonym, and Campbell published his own inherited story under the by-line of “Don A. He also faced the puzzle of what to do with a manuscript which he had submitted to Tremaine, and now inherited back with the editorship of Astounding. He held the post at Astounding, later rechristened Analog Science Fiction and Fact, until his death in 1971. He stopped writing stories and thereafter devoted his efforts to building one of the most successful – and controversial – editorial careers in the history of science fiction. Despite being a popular author, Campbell was struggling with the unreliable income of a freelance writer he was quick to accept the editorship of Astounding (which he promptly rechristened Astounding Science Fiction).
